Which social media platforms are used most in Sweden, and which should your business invest in? The first question is about statistics, the second about your customers. Here you get both: the 2026 Swedish figures for nine platforms, who you actually reach on each one, and a method for choosing.
Unless stated otherwise, the figures come from Svenskarna och internet 2026, the annual survey by the Swedish Internet Foundation (Internetstiftelsen). They describe Sweden. If you work in another market, look for your own country’s equivalent survey. Everything about the platforms’ features and rules reflects the situation on 15 October 2026. Sources are at the end.
How social media is used in Sweden in 2026
94 percent of internet users in Sweden aged 8 and over have used social media in the past year. 90 percent use it every week and 83 percent every day. This is how it breaks down across the nine platforms that matter for businesses:
| Platform | Used in the past 12 months | At least weekly | Daily |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 77% | 50% | 32% |
| 69% | 57% | 45% | |
| 66% | 56% | 46% | |
| Snapchat | 38% | 30% | 24% |
| 27% | 12% | 5% | |
| TikTok | 22% | 17% | 15% |
| 18% | 5% | 2% | |
| X | 13% | 8% | 5% |
| Threads | 7% | 2% | 1% |
Source: Swedish Internet Foundation, Svenskarna och internet 2026, chart 3.2. Base: internet users in Sweden aged 8 and over.
Facebook Messenger, used by 66 percent in the past year, is counted in the report as a messaging app rather than a social medium. For a business it still matters, because it is often where customers’ questions arrive.
How the figures were collected. Novus collected the answers for the Swedish Internet Foundation in January 2026. The main study is based on 2,944 web interviews with people aged 16 and over from Novus’s randomly recruited panel, 682 interviews with children and young people aged 8–19, and telephone interviews with people who rarely or never use the internet. The results are weighted against data from Statistics Sweden, among other sources, for gender, age, education and region. The question asks which social media you have used in the past 12 months, and how often.
Four things in the figures that matter for a business:
- Reach and habit are different things. YouTube has the most users over a year, but Instagram and Facebook are used most often. 27 percent have used LinkedIn in the past year, but only 5 percent are there every day.
- No platform is growing at the moment. No platform gained significantly more users between 2025 and 2026. Facebook fell in daily and weekly use, from 49 to 45 percent daily.
- Facebook’s everyday use is shrinking. Total use is stable, but daily use has fallen from 54 percent in 2021 to 45 percent in 2026.
- TikTok has stood still since 2023. Daily use rose from 10 percent in 2021 to 15 percent in 2023 and has stayed at 14–15 percent since.
How it has changed since 2021
| Platform | Daily 2021 | Daily 2026 | Past year 2021 | Past year 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 35% | 32% | 81% | 77% |
| 54% | 45% | 71% | 69% | |

| Snapchat | 23% | 24% | 38% | 38% |
| TikTok | 10% | 15% | 19% | 22% |
| 6% | 5% | 25% | 27% | |
| X | 7% | 5% | 19% | 13% |
| 3% | 2% | 22% | 18% |

According to the Swedish Internet Foundation, YouTube is slowly declining over the long term, and Facebook’s daily use has fallen gradually. X has gone from 19 to 13 percent in past-year use since 2021. Instagram has stood still, at 46–48 percent daily since 2021.
Who you reach on each platform
The average for the whole population hides what matters to a business: who is where. Three differences are large: age, gender and occupation.
| Platform | Adults 20+, daily | Ages 8–19, daily | Women, past year | Men, past year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 28% | 48% | 72% | 83% |
| 53% | 5% | 74% | 64% | |
| 50% | 26% | 76% | 56% | |
| Snapchat | 19% | 52% | 42% | 35% |
| 6% | 0% | 28% | 27% | |
| TikTok | 9% | 42% | 24% | 19% |
| 1% | 4% | 29% | 6% | |
| X | 6% | 1% | 6% | 20% |

Source: Svenskarna och internet 2026, charts 3.4e and 3.7a and table 3.9. Base: internet users in Sweden aged 8 and over.
Among adults aged 20 and over, Facebook is the largest for daily use, closely followed by Instagram. TikTok is used daily by 9 percent of adults, not many more than LinkedIn and X at 6 percent each.

Age: where is the line?

Source: Svenskarna och internet 2026, charts 3.4b and 3.4d. The ages are our conversion of the birth decades.
Read the table as a map of your customers’ ages. If they were born in the 1970s or earlier, more of them use Facebook than Instagram every day. Among those born in the 1980s the two are roughly level. If your customers were born in the 1990s or later, Instagram takes over, and among those born in the 2000s Snapchat is the largest of all, at 66 percent daily. TikTok is larger than Instagram only among children born in 2010 or later.
Gender
Instagram is used by clearly more women than men: 58 percent of women use it every day, against 35 percent of men. On Facebook the gap is smaller, 50 against 40 percent. Among men, YouTube is the largest for daily use at 44 percent, against 18 percent of women. Pinterest has been used by 29 percent of women and 6 percent of men in the past year, X by 20 percent of men and 6 percent of women.
Occupation
6 in 10 white-collar workers in Sweden have used LinkedIn in the past year, 3 in 10 use it at least weekly and 13 percent daily. Among people in blue-collar jobs the figure is 16 percent, so white-collar workers are nearly four times as likely to use it. Almost half of private-sector employees use LinkedIn, against just over a third of public-sector employees. That is why LinkedIn looks small in the population but large in the business world.
Facebook or Instagram?
Short answer: usually both. If you need one main channel, go by your customers’ age and gender.
| Daily, everyone aged 8+ | 45% | 46% |
| Daily, adults aged 20+ | 53% | 50% |

Why it often ends up being both. If your Facebook Page and Instagram account are linked in Meta Business Suite, you can publish and schedule posts, Reels and Stories to both in one go, and ads for both are created in Meta’s Ads Manager. A photo post from the business usually works on both. If the audiences differ a lot, you can untick one platform and schedule it separately, which we cover in Best time to post and how often.
Choose Facebook as your main channel if your customers were mostly born in the 1970s or earlier, or if a lot of your contact happens through messages and events. In Sweden, more than half of people born in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s use Facebook every day. Meta announced in June 2025 that all videos on Facebook would be shared as Reels, so short video is part of the feed here too.
Choose Instagram as your main channel if your customers were born in the 1990s or later, if many of them are women, or if your business has something to show in pictures. Instagram has stayed at 46–48 percent daily since 2021, while Facebook’s daily use has fallen. With Reels you can also reach people who don’t follow you.

More on how the advertising differs is on our pages about Facebook ads and Instagram ads, in Swedish.
Instagram or TikTok?
Short answer: if you sell to adults, Instagram is almost always the right start. TikTok becomes relevant when your customers are young and you can film regularly.

Source: Svenskarna och internet 2026 (Swedish figures). The platforms’ own descriptions: Instagram, 31 May 2023, and TikTok, 18 June 2020.
The figures are clear. Among adults aged 20 and over in Sweden, more than five times as many use Instagram as TikTok every day. Counted over the past year, 50 percent of 8–19-year-olds have used TikTok, against 16 percent of adults aged 20 and over. Even among people born in the 2000s, now roughly 16–26 years old, Instagram is larger. Only among 8–19-year-olds does TikTok come out ahead.
Both platforms can show a video to people who have never heard of you, so a new account is not without a chance on either. The difference is who is watching.
You don’t always have to choose. A vertical video can go on both, but upload the original file rather than a downloaded copy carrying the other platform’s watermark. Instagram says watermarked Reels are shown to fewer people, and under TikTok’s guidelines, reused clips showing someone else’s watermark or logo, posted without creative edits, are not eligible for the For You feed. On TikTok, businesses should also use music from TikTok’s Commercial Music Library rather than the general music library. TikTok Shop is not open in Sweden, as of October 2026, which we cover in TikTok Shop and Sweden.
Whether TikTok suits your particular business is something you can work out with our decision guide Do local businesses need to be on TikTok?
Which are the best platforms for lead generation through social media in Sweden?
For businesses that sell to other businesses, LinkedIn is the first choice for leads in Sweden. 6 in 10 white-collar workers have used it in the past year, and the forms in LinkedIn’s ads are pre-filled automatically with profile data. For local businesses that sell to consumers, Facebook and Instagram are the first choices, because roughly half of all adults use them every day and Meta’s form and messaging ads work on both. TikTok and Snapchat also have form ads, but mainly reach the youngest. As of October 2026.
By a lead we mean an enquiry with contact details: a completed form, a message asking about a booking, or a phone call.
| Platform | Use in Sweden, 2026 | Forms in ads, as of October 2026 | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 45% daily, 78% of adults 20+ in the past year | Yes. Meta’s lead form ads are pre-filled with information the user has shared with Facebook. Ads can also open a chat in Messenger. | Local services for adults, including local B2B | |
| 46% daily, 58% of women daily | Yes, the same forms via Meta, plus ads that open a chat in Instagram | Local businesses with something to show | |
| 5% daily, but 6 in 10 white-collar workers | Yes. Lead Gen Forms are pre-filled from the profile, in Sponsored Content and Message Ads. No longer on the company Page. | B2B | |
| TikTok | 15% daily, 9% of adults 20+ daily | Yes, in-app forms. Contact details may be pre-filled for people who have shared them with TikTok before. | Young customers |
| Snapchat | 24% daily, 66% of those born in the 2000s daily | Yes. According to Snap, the forms are pre-filled with profile information. | Customers aged 16–26 |
| YouTube | 32% daily, 77% in the past year | According to Google, lead forms can be added to Search and Performance Max campaigns. For ordinary video campaigns, plan on a landing page. | Services that need explaining |
| 2% daily, 29% of women in the past year | Available, but according to Pinterest not yet open to all advertisers | Interiors, weddings and other things people plan | |
| X | 5% daily | Yes, since August 2026 according to X | Industries that already hold the conversation there |
| Threads | 1% daily | Ads since January 2026, but Meta mentions no forms | Not a lead channel today |
Use: Svenskarna och internet 2026 (Swedish figures). Forms: the platforms’ own help and advertising pages, read on 15 October 2026.
B2B lead generation: start on LinkedIn
The ads. LinkedIn ads can be targeted by job title, seniority, industry and company size, among other things. The forms, called Lead Gen Forms, are pre-filled with the member’s profile data and work in Sponsored Content and Message Ads. That keeps the path from ad to enquiry short. How it works in practice is on our page about LinkedIn advertising, in Swedish.
The company Page is not enough. LinkedIn has removed the forms that could previously sit on the company Page itself. According to LinkedIn’s Help Centre, they can no longer be created. Organically, people therefore matter more: the founder’s and employees’ profiles and posts, where customers can get in touch directly. With Thought Leader Ads, a business can also pay to boost posts by employees, industry experts or customers, and the author approves the request first.
The tone. People in Sweden who use LinkedIn every week or day value the networking, the job ads, content that helps them at work and the serious tone, according to Svenskarna och internet 2026. They dislike bragging, sob stories and posts that aren’t about work. A post that answers a question your customers actually have fits in better than one about how proud you are.
Selling to local businesses? Then you can often reach the owners on Facebook as well, since 78 percent of adults aged 20 and over in Sweden have used Facebook in the past year. But LinkedIn is where you can target a particular role.
Local businesses: Facebook and Instagram, and the messages
Forms. Meta’s lead form ads are pre-filled with information people have already shared with Facebook, and they can run on both Facebook and Instagram. More on the set-up is on our Facebook advertising page, in Swedish.
Messages. Meta also has ads that open a chat in Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp instead of a form. Meta’s own advice is to start with easy, qualifying questions and save the more sensitive ones for later, and that six questions or fewer is usually best. For a salon or a tradesperson, a message can be a more natural first contact than a form.
Without an ad budget, enquiries come through messages, the link in your profile and phone calls. Reply quickly, and make sure every profile leads to a page where the customer can book or get in touch. How to tag the link in your profile so the visits show up in your analytics is covered in What does social media help cost?, in the section on measuring whether it pays off.
Before you run lead form ads
- Have a privacy policy ready. Google’s lead forms require a link to it, Pinterest’s forms include one, and customers should be able to see how you handle their details.
- Download leads regularly. Pinterest deletes the data 30 days after the form was submitted, and it cannot be recovered.
- Add a qualifying question. Pre-filled fields make it easy to submit without thinking. TikTok itself says its simplest format, the Form Card, suits advertisers who prioritise a high volume of leads over quality.
- Follow up as soon as you can, while the enquiry is fresh. Decide in advance who calls or replies.
If you’d rather we handled the ads, our full approach is on our advertising page, in Swedish.
Snapchat, X, Threads, YouTube and Pinterest: when they are worth the time
YouTube
YouTube has the most users of all in Sweden, 77 percent in the past year, but 32 percent daily. It has more men than women, 83 against 72 percent in the past year, and the gap is larger in everyday use: 44 percent of men use YouTube every day, against 18 percent of women. Shorts can be up to three minutes long.
Worth the time if you can explain something your customers wonder about, such as how a treatment works, what a renovation involves or the answers to common questions. A video like that often takes more work than a photo post. YouTube advertising, in Swedish.
Snapchat
38 percent in Sweden have used Snapchat in the past year and 24 percent use it daily. Among people born in the 2000s it is the platform most use every day, 66 percent, but among adults aged 20 and over the figure is 19 percent. Snap said in 2023 that over 4 million people in Sweden used Snapchat every month and that over 55 percent of them were 25 or older. That is Snap’s own figure, and we have not found a newer one for Sweden.
Worth the time if your customers are 16–26, for example for a gym, a driving school, a nightlife venue or an event. Snapchat advertising, in Swedish.
18 percent in Sweden have used Pinterest in the past year, but only 2 percent use it daily. Its users are mainly women, and the level has been flat since 2023. According to Pinterest, a Pin can get engagement months or years after it was published, so the platform suits content with a long shelf life.
Worth the time if your customers plan ahead and save ideas, for example for interiors, weddings, food or fashion. Pinterest advertising, in Swedish.
X
13 percent in Sweden have used X in the past year, down from 19 percent in 2021, and 5 percent use it daily. 20 percent of men and 6 percent of women have used it. In the code X has published for its For You feed, posts older than 48 hours are filtered out, so a post has a short life in the feed.
Worth the time if your industry already holds the conversation there. For most local service businesses the audience is too narrow. X advertising, in Swedish.
Threads
7 percent in Sweden have used Threads in the past year, and 1 percent use it daily. Globally, Threads had more than 400 million monthly active users in January 2026 according to Meta, which from late January gradually began showing ads to users in all markets. Meta says nothing about lead form ads on Threads.
Worth the time if you already have an active Instagram account and want to test short text posts. As a main channel, Threads is too small in Sweden today.
Other measures: the Media Barometer and DataReportal
Search for social media statistics for Sweden and you will find figures other than the ones above. They are not wrong. They measure something else.
| Source | What it measures | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Svenskarna och internet 2026, Swedish Internet Foundation | Share of internet users aged 8 and over who used the platform in the past 12 months, weekly and daily. Collected in January 2026. | 83% use social media daily |
| Mediebarometern 2025 (the Media Barometer), Nordicom at the University of Gothenburg | Share of the population aged 9–85 who used a medium on an average day in 2025. Around 6,000 randomly selected people. | 84% used social media on an average day, 52% watched YouTube |
| Digital 2026: Sweden, DataReportal | Potential reach in the platforms’ ad tools, October 2025 | YouTube 8.58 million, Facebook 5.65 million, Instagram 5.55 million |
| The platforms’ own figures | Whatever the platform itself counts as a user | Snapchat: over 4 million a month in Sweden (Snap, 2023) |
The Media Barometer asks what people did on an average day, across the whole population aged 9–85. That is why it can show that 52 percent watched YouTube on an average day in 2025, while Svenskarna och internet shows that 32 percent use YouTube daily. According to Nordicom, YouTube overtook scheduled TV in daily reach in 2025. The Media Barometer also shows that Facebook was most common among people over 44, Instagram and Facebook among 25–44-year-olds, and Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok among 15–24-year-olds. That matches the picture above.
DataReportal compiles how many people the platforms’ ad tools say an ad can reach. DataReportal itself says the figures do not necessarily match monthly active users, and that they may not be unique individuals. LinkedIn’s 6.20 million are registered members, and TikTok’s 3.51 million only covers people aged 18 and over. Compare that with 12 percent of internet users in Sweden being on LinkedIn at least weekly and 5 percent daily: an ad tool showing 6.2 million members tells you little about how many you reach in an ordinary week.
Rule of thumb: never compare figures from different sources directly. If you are comparing platforms or years, stick to the same source.
Choose in three steps
Start with one main channel, or with Facebook and Instagram together, since they are run from the same tool. Evaluate after three months on enquiries and bookings, not on followers. Add the next channel only once the first has a rhythm you can keep.
As a starting point, our assessment based on the figures above:
| If your customers are mainly | Start with | Add once the rhythm holds |
|---|---|---|
| Adult consumers born in the 1970s or earlier | ||
| Adult consumers born in the 1980s and 1990s | Instagram and Facebook | Reels, or YouTube if you can explain something |
| Young, roughly 16–26 | Snapchat or TikTok | |
| Predominantly women | Pinterest if customers plan ahead, for example for interiors or weddings | |
| Other businesses | LinkedIn, through people’s profiles | Ads with Lead Gen Forms, or YouTube for explainer video |
What social media actually does for a local business, and what to post, is covered in Social media for local businesses. How often to post on each platform is in Best time to post and how often. If you would rather someone else ran the channels, our social media help has its own page.
Frequently asked questions
Which social media platform is the largest in Sweden in 2026?
It depends on how you count. YouTube has the most users over a year, 77 percent of internet users aged 8 and over. For daily use, Instagram (46 percent) and Facebook (45 percent) are the largest, followed by YouTube (32 percent), Snapchat (24 percent) and TikTok (15 percent). The figures come from Svenskarna och internet 2026, collected by the polling company Novus in January 2026.
How many people in Sweden use social media?
94 percent of internet users in Sweden aged 8 and over have used social media in the past year, 90 percent use it every week and 83 percent every day, according to Svenskarna och internet 2026. Nordicom’s Media Barometer reports that 84 percent of 9–85-year-olds used social media on an average day in 2025, but it measures in a different way.
Should a business choose Facebook or Instagram?
Usually both, because they are run from the same Meta tool. If you need one main channel, go by your customers’ age and gender. In Sweden, among people born in the 1970s or earlier, more use Facebook than Instagram every day; among those born in the 1980s the two are roughly level; and among those born in the 1990s or later, Instagram is the larger. Instagram is used daily by 58 percent of women and 35 percent of men.
Should a business go for Instagram or TikTok?
If you sell to adults, Instagram is almost always the right start. In Sweden, 50 percent of adults aged 20 and over use Instagram every day and 9 percent use TikTok. TikTok is larger than Instagram only among 8–19-year-olds, and even among people born in the 2000s more use Instagram daily, 63 against 52 percent. TikTok becomes relevant when your customers are young and you can film regularly.
Which platform is best for B2B leads?
Usually LinkedIn. According to Svenskarna och internet 2026, 6 in 10 white-collar workers in Sweden have used the platform in the past year, and LinkedIn ads can be targeted by job title, industry and company size, among other things. The forms in the ads are pre-filled with profile data. LinkedIn has removed the forms that could previously sit on the company Page itself, so organically the founder’s and employees’ profiles and posts matter more.
Is TikTok growing in Sweden?
Not at the moment. 15 percent of internet users in Sweden use TikTok every day, the same level as in 2023. The increase came between 2021 (10 percent) and 2023, and no platform gained significantly more users between 2025 and 2026. TikTok Shop is not open in Sweden, as of October 2026.
Why do social media statistics differ?
The sources measure different things. Svenskarna och internet asks internet users aged 8 and over which platforms they have used and how often. The Media Barometer measures what the population aged 9–85 used on an average day. DataReportal reports how many people the platforms’ ad tools say an ad can reach, and DataReportal itself says these figures do not necessarily match monthly active users and may not be unique individuals. So never compare figures from different sources directly.
How many social media platforms should a business be on?
Start with one main channel, or Facebook and Instagram together since they are run from the same place. Add a channel only once the first has a rhythm you can keep for at least a quarter. Our advice is one channel run well rather than four run half-heartedly.
