If you sell to customers in Sweden, the two big social shopping options are in very different places. Instagram Shopping is available, but every purchase ends on your own website. TikTok Shop lets customers buy without leaving the app where it is open, but on 13 October 2026 a Swedish business cannot open one.
That makes the decision simpler than it sounds. You don’t have to pick a platform first. You have to build what both of them depend on, and then switch on whatever is open.
Here is the comparison, dated and sourced, and what you can do now.
TikTok Shop vs Instagram Shopping in Sweden: the comparison
Status as of 13 October 2026. Both platforms change their rules often, so check the current terms before you build.

Can customers buy directly on Instagram in Sweden?
No, and in practice businesses in Sweden never could. Instagram’s in-app checkout launched in March 2019 as a closed beta for users in the US. Since September 2025 it doesn’t exist at all: according to Meta, every purchase in a Facebook or Instagram shop is completed on the business’s own website.
What remains is the shop window. You can have a shop on Instagram, tag up to 20 products in a post and add a product sticker with up to five products to a story. The customer sees the product page in the app and moves on to your store to pay.
Two things are worth knowing:
- Sweden is a beta market. On Meta’s list of supported countries, only the US has the full experience of shops and shop ads. Sweden, like Germany, France and the UK, is in an open beta where some sellers may not have every feature.
- Order handling is yours. Meta has switched off payouts, order management, returns and refunds in Commerce Manager. All of that now runs through your own store.
You don’t even need an in-app shop to advertise. According to Meta, a catalog is enough to create ads with product tags or boost tagged posts.
Is TikTok Shop available in Sweden?
No. On 13 October 2026, TikTok had not announced a launch of TikTok Shop in Sweden or anywhere else in the Nordics.
TikTok’s European seller registration page lists the markets you can sell in, and Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland are not among them. The page also shows who can register: sellers in Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. A company based in Sweden is not on that list. The position for Austria is unclear. TikTok announced that Austrian businesses could register from 1 June 2026, but when we checked the seller page on 14 October 2026, Austria was not among those eight countries.
Swedish brands can still sell in a country where TikTok accepts sellers, with registration, a warehouse and returns in that country. The Swedish trade publication Ehandel.se reported in September 2025 that the makeup brand IsaDora had started on TikTok Shop in Germany. How it was set up was not clear from the part of the article we could read.
What about a date for Sweden? Market, another Swedish trade publication, wrote in April 2026 that a Nordic launch is being prepared, but no timeline appears in the part of the article that is not behind the paywall. Several agency blogs guess at anything from mid-2026 to early 2027, without pointing to anything TikTok has said. Anyone who promises you a date is guessing.
Which countries in Europe have TikTok Shop?
According to TikTok’s newsroom, TikTok Shop started in the UK in 2021, in Spain and Ireland in December 2024, and in Germany, France and Italy in March 2025. More EU countries opened on 15 June 2026, though TikTok’s own sources don’t agree on how many. The May press release named four new countries (Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland), while TikTok’s August transparency report under the Digital Services Act named eight, adding the Czech Republic, Greece, Portugal and Hungary. In those four countries customers can buy from sellers elsewhere, but the seller page does not list them as countries for local sellers.
When we read TikTok’s European seller page on 13 October 2026, it listed 13 European markets: Germany, Spain, Italy, Ireland, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Austria, Greece, Portugal and Hungary. The UK, where TikTok Shop launched first, is not among those 13. Outside Europe, Shopify’s setup guide lists the US, Mexico, Japan and Brazil, among others.
Where TikTok Shop is open, TikTok takes a commission on each order. According to trade press (ChannelX and Händlerbund, December 2025), it rose from 5 to 9 percent in Germany, Spain, France, Italy and Ireland on 8 January 2026, with a lower rate for some categories such as electronics. ChannelX reported the same rise to 9 percent in the UK from 2 September 2024. Fees change often, so check them in TikTok’s Seller Center before you work out your margins.
In Sweden today, TikTok is a way to get discovered and send people on to your store. With at least 1,000 followers or a verified business account, you can add a website link to your profile. Ads have been around for a while: according to Ehandel.se, TikTok launched Ads Manager and a Shopify connection for video ads for Swedish businesses in May 2021. How does the buying journey work on Instagram and TikTok?
The buying journey is the biggest difference between the two, and it depends on where your customer is.
Instagram, in Sweden today. The customer sees a product tag, a product sticker or your shop in the app and opens the product page. To pay, they move on to your website, where orders, payment, delivery and returns are handled.
TikTok Shop, where it is open. The customer buys in a video, in a live stream or in the Shop tab. Checkout is inside TikTok and payment goes through third-party providers. You fulfill the order, for example from Shopify.
TikTok, in Sweden today. The customer watches a video and taps the link in your profile or an ad. The profile link opens in TikTok’s in-app browser and takes them to your store.
So in Sweden, both platforms currently lead to the same place: your own store. That is the most important line in the whole comparison.
What has happened to Instagram Shopping?
Quite a lot, in a short time. In January 2023, Instagram announced that the Shop tab would disappear from the app’s navigation in February, according to Retail Dive. Meta said people could still shop in the feed, Reels, Stories and Explore and through ads. In April that year, Meta began requiring in-app checkout for new shops in the US, while Sweden and 20 other markets could keep shops that link to a website, according to TechCrunch. From September 2025, Meta went the other way and moved every purchase to businesses’ own websites.
That doesn’t make Instagram the wrong channel. It means the features inside an app are rented, just like the reach. We have written more about why platform reach is rented. What you build in your own store, the catalog, the terms and the customer relationship, stays when the platform changes its mind.
When does Instagram fit, and when does TikTok?
Instagram fits today if your products sell well in photos, you have an audience that already follows you and you want to sell now. You can connect it straight away, as long as you meet Meta’s requirements.
TikTok fits today as a channel for getting discovered through video, with a profile link and ads that lead to your store. It only works if you can keep producing video regularly. If you are unsure, work through our TikTok decision guide.
TikTok Shop fits if and when it opens in Sweden, or earlier if your business is based in one of the countries where TikTok accepts sellers. Until then it is preparation, not sales.
If you only have the energy for one channel, choose the one where your customers already are and the format you can keep going. The foundation underneath is the same.
How to build a foundation for both, in the right order
- Your own store on your own domain. Meta requires that products can be bought directly on a verified domain, and Shopify’s TikTok Shop setup assumes an online store. The store is the hub for both.
- Sort out the catalog once. Names, images, prices and variants in order. Give images descriptive file names and alt text, as Google recommends, so the same work helps them show up in Google Images. Choose the catalog carefully: according to Meta, only one catalog can be connected to a shop, and it can’t be swapped later.
- Write clear return and refund terms. Both platforms require them.
- Connect Instagram now. Shopify’s Facebook & Instagram app is Meta’s official app and is free to install, although ads are paid for as usual. It syncs your products to a catalog and adds the pixel. Then tag products in posts and stories.
- Connect TikTok’s ads side now. TikTok’s Shopify app gives you ads and the pixel today. The Shop part needs a market where TikTok Shop is open and that Shopify supports: ten countries in October 2026, according to Shopify.
- Start with video. Short product videos can run both in Reels and on TikTok, so one shoot covers both channels. If you want to try live, one of the formats in TikTok Shop, read about live selling for everyday products.
- Measure in your own store. Meta’s metrics for purchases on Meta now show as zero. Meta suggests tracking purchases on your website instead, ideally with your own analytics tool such as Google Analytics.
- Don’t pay for a launch that doesn’t exist. Packages that promise you a place in a Swedish TikTok Shop are selling something that doesn’t exist today.
What we build
We build fully custom online stores on top of Shopify: your design, Shopify’s checkout with Swish (Sweden’s mobile payment app), Klarna and cards, and you own the account and the domain. Among other projects, we have built a store like this for a leading Swedish artist. If you want a store that works with Instagram today and is prepared for TikTok Shop, talk to us.
